Andy Warhol: Endangered Species
An animation for an exhibit at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, supported by Art Bridges, displaying 10 prints of endangered animals by legendary pop artist Andy Warhol.
While making this animation I got to study 2 of my favorite topics simultaneously: art and environmentalism. In 1983 Andy Warhol created prints depicting 10 animals from the original endangered species list, rendered in his signature vibrant style that he had previously used to depict celebrities. By doing this, Warhol elevated these animals to the same iconic status as his previous subject matter and brought attention to the Endangered Species Act.
Both the narrative and visual style were crucial in making this animation enhance the Endangered Species exhibit. I thought about what the most important elements of the story were, and while collaborating with the museum we decided that the animation should be able to serve as an introduction to Warhol for anyone who doesn't know him, but also go in depth about this specific series of prints that many fans might not know about. I chose to replicate Warhol's vibrant style for the animation as I thought that is best served the story and would catch attention on the gallery wall.
To have my work on the same walls as a legend like Andy Warhol was a true honor, and one of the most rewarding projects I have completed. However, with most of my works the process is just as satisfying, and this one was no exception. I enjoyed immersing myself in Andy Warhol media and learning about the Endangered Species Act to make an accurate and informed animation. I was even able to visit the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to find inspiration and learn more about his work. Condensing everything I learned into a 1-minute animation was not easy, but the final result speaks for itself.
Andy Warhol: Endangered Species is at the Peoria Riverfront Museum from September 23 - December 11, 2022. After that it may follow the prints to their next exhibition.
