Breathe

A music video about a man learning to cherish his memories.

For this project I was given a few images to go off of, for example the bathtub is a real location that the band wanted in the video. Then I listened to the song several times and started to figure out how I could fit the band’s ideas into a story that matches the music and lyrics. I was struck by the perfect symmetry of the bathtub location and the distant female vocals, so the idea of a ‘missing woman’ started to take form. Through many revisions and bouncing ideas back and forth, we came up with this story about experiencing loss and holding onto memories.
.
The colors in Breathe come from the official Walk to End Alzheimer’s flowers that you get when you donate to the cause. Blue is for someone suffering from the disease, yellow is for a caretaker, purple represents someone lost, and orange is for anyone else who supports the cause. The goal is to give out the first white flower, which represents someone who has been cured. Losing a loved one to Alzheimer’s felt like the perfect fit for a story about memories. It’s such a terrible disease, and finding an uplifting way to end the video was a major challenge, so we decided to make the specifics of her condition less of a focus, and turn the attention towards the husband’s journey to accept the past. The main idea is that we should cherish our connections to memories, because even if they are painful we are still better off than those who cannot remember.
